Richard Tarlton

The most celebrated clown of Elizabethan England. Principal comic actor of Queen Elizabeth's Men and a favourite of the Queen herself. His improvisational style and jigs were enormously popular. Some scholars believe Shakespeare's Yorick (whose skull Hamlet contemplates) was written in memory of Tarlton.
